Chapter Fifteen

As soon as the last of us had finished eating, Ronan encouraged us to gather our belongings. No doubt he wished to head to the council as soon as possible, and the sun was still rising in the sky when we set out across the fields to the lake. We said goodbye to Gwaelon a little over half way, and he made his way along the edge of a field and toward a small hut I’d not noticed the last time we’d walked out to the border.

We were so early to reach the city that we had to wait for a few minutes for the change of guards to emerge from the nearby building and for Ronan’s relief watch to officially take over.

Ronan filled another centaur in on a brief version of events, warning the other guard about the possibility of danger. As the even more somber, quiet, and aloof centaur strode away, I sighed with relief. It hadn’t been Seth, which was a bonus, but I was starting to get the impression that I’d already met all the friendly people in the city.

The journey to the center of the Sanctuary was quicker than the last time, none of us stopping to admire the scenery and the sense of need to see the council more urgent than before.

Ronan or Gwaelon must have sent a message ahead because the council was already mostly there, and only Elowan arrived after us, his willow branches waving in the wind until he was inside the building.

I moved respectfully to one side, but he seemed to ignore my presence and climbed the stairs, mumbling something about being so stiff at this time of the morning.

Trying to keep my cool and calm the nerves knotting my stomach, I followed Ronan up to the council room. Thankfully the stairs were wide enough for Zephyr, and his wound was not bad enough to prevent him walking up them.

As soon as we were up on the main floor, I leaned into him. The first time we’d been up here, everyone had been more friendly. We’d been invited to eat with them, and they’d appeared excited about my genealogy.

There was nothing exciting or respectful this morning. Clearly not happy about being woken up, they were all in their seats and staring at Ronan as if he was expected to explain.

“We’ve had more problems at the border, councilors,” Ronan began.

“I think that’s pretty clear,” Lorcan replied. “Or we wouldn’t all be here.”

Ronan lowered his head respectfully, but I caught a snort. He wasn’t happy about the reprimand.

I stepped forward, not wanting others to be blamed for what had happened or have their relationships damaged by trying to help me.

“The agent I mentioned last time I was brought before you is proving to be incredibly determined. It took several of us to see him off, and in the process, a fire started in the forest. It took all our skills and effort to keep the agents at bay and put out the fire before it could threaten the Sanctuary.
